Can you share with us your journey with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, from the initial diagnosis to where you are now?
My name is Gonim Maria, and my life took an unexpected turn just days after celebrating my twenty-sixth birthday when I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. This diagnosis marked the climax of a journey that began innocuously over a year prior. In February 2023, I first noticed persistent back pain, which I initially brushed off as inconsequential. I had blood tests done, but they didn’t show anything alarming because I had a bit of a cold a few days before. As I began my work at a restaurant on the picturesque Cyclades island of Andros, Greece, in May 2023, the discomfort intensified, spreading to my arm and leg.
Despite inconclusive initial tests suggesting unrelated conditions, such as chondropathy, a herniated disc, and potential tendinitis, I delayed further examination, prioritizing job security over immediate medical attention. My doctor provided me with pain medication to manage the symptoms until I could schedule an exam.
However, one fateful day, while enjoying some time at the beach and later at home, the pain became unbearable, eventually leading to paralysis in my legs. Panicked, I sought medical assistance, and after receiving an injection for back pain, the immediate relief allowed me to return home. Yet, the ordeal was far from over. I experienced profuse sweating, accompanied by spasms, initially attributing them to topical treatments.
As my symptoms persisted, I began a regimen of Norgesic and later Arcoxia, which unfortunately exacerbated my condition, impairing my cognitive abilities and rendering me unable to function properly. Seeking relief, I switched to Voltaren combined with Depon effervescent tablets, providing only temporary respite from the excruciating pain.
Events took a drastic turn one evening after work, as a sip of beer triggered a sharp pain in my chest, prompting me to investigate further. Online research led me to the possibility of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, instilling fear and urgency in me to seek medical attention. Following consultations with various specialists, a series of tests, and countless struggles, I was finally diagnosed with Lymphoma on October 2nd, after weeks of uncertainty and suffering.
What have been the most significant challenges you’ve faced during your treatment process, and how have you overcome them?
I immediately began chemoimmunotherapy, feeling the searing heat of the treatment coursing through my veins. To alleviate further discomfort for both myself and my medical team, a PICC line was inserted into my arm. Despite enduring immense pain, I drew strength from reflecting on my journey thus far, fortifying myself with courage.
My path to recovery was marked by numerous medical procedures: two bronchoscopies, one through the mouth and another through the nose, both performed while awake and without anesthesia; a biopsy surgery on the right side of my throat, and the insertion of the PICC line. Through these challenges, I’ve come to understand the invaluable role of prevention in saving lives.
In the words of Giannis Ritsos, “You still have a long way to cry before you learn how to laugh.” Throughout this arduous journey, I’ve confronted the forces of body, mind, and soul. Initially numbed by the shock of my diagnosis, I gradually emerged with renewed energy, driven by the simple necessity of living. Though darkness and loneliness pervade this road, it has also revealed my hidden resilience and connected me with newfound allies who guide me toward happiness. I believe I am evolving into a better version of myself.
While many cancer cases cannot be prevented, early detection and treatment significantly impact outcomes. The symptoms I experienced never hinted at the severity of my condition, yet each one played a crucial role in uncovering the truth: back pain, loss of appetite, rapid weight loss, persistent coughing with spasms, chest pain after consuming alcohol, night sweats, and an unusual odor emanating from my body. These symptoms, seemingly innocuous at first, served as warning signs, urging me to seek medical attention.
Cancer’s intrusion reshapes lives indiscriminately, disrupting homes, breaking families, and erasing smiles. It strips away identities, leaving behind mere shadows of our former selves. Yet, amidst the turmoil, I choose optimism each day, clinging to hope even in the darkest of times.
“When the darkness is deep, you can see the stars.” Through this battle for survival, an indomitable inner strength has awakened within me. Armed with this newfound resilience, I stand prepared to face the onslaught of adversity. And in the embrace of loved ones, I find solace and a reminder of why surrender is not an option. Thus, I gaze up at the stars, unwavering in my determination to persevere.
What support systems have been most helpful to you throughout your battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma?
My support system included my family, friends, doctors, nurses, and individuals I encountered daily—some who had conquered cancer, others offering kind words, and those newly confronting the disease from around the globe. While the hospital offered access to a psychologist, I found that I didn’t require one. Instead, I’ve turned to pranic healing and strength training, which have proven even more beneficial for my well-being.
What advice would you offer to others who are currently fighting Hodgkin’s lymphoma or have recently been diagnosed?
I would recommend individuals facing lymphoma or any type of cancer diagnosis to maintain a positive outlook and eliminate all toxic individuals and situations from their lives. Choose to face cancer with a smile and send it back to where it came from—it has no place in anyone’s body!
